Repeat after me: “I am an appreciating asset.”
Even if you don’t understand what that means, repeat it three times daily and see what happens in a month.
In finance, an appreciating asset is something that increases in value. By contrast, a depreciating asset is something that goes down in value. Some examples of the latter are: new cars, boats, clothes and electronic goods.
Some examples of the former are houses, long-term investment portfolios, and high quality collectible items like art and rare antiquities.
All these examples are external objects and possessions, so I get that it may be a leap to view oneself as an appreciating asset per se.
Career growth
As you grow in your career or vocation, you gain experience, skills, knowledge and contacts that add to your overall value. Generally speaking, over time, you become a better version of yourself. In this way, you are an appreciating asset and you’ll get paid more over time for it too. This is certainly true in most professions, from lawyers to hairdressers.
Not many people think of themselves an an appreciating asset because many are plagued with fear, doubt and self-esteem issues which run counter to seeing themselves as at asset of any kind.
If you want to grow wealth, you must flip your thinking. To become a winner, you need to think of yourself as such.
It begins with baby steps.
Next time you catch yourself talking s-t about yourself stop and come up with something more positive, anything to deflect attention away from your toxic line of thinking.
If you can’t conjure anything kind to say about yourself, then take stock of all the fantastic things you do have going on in your life, whether it’s pets, friends, family, being able to get out of bed and feed yourself or feel the sun on your skin. Find gratitude and appreciation for the abundance you have already attracted. There is plenty, even if you feel like you’re poor.
Grab a pack of sticky notes and plaster them around the house, reminding yourself that you are ‘an appreciating asset’, cultivate an “attitude of gratitude” and however cheese you think that is, bask in it, build on it, and wait to see what unfolds.
